A Small Archive of Patterns and Textures

A pattern notebook can connect observations from textiles, ceramics and architecture. It works best as a record of where a detail was encountered and what caught your eye. A simple drawing often preserves the rhythm of a pattern more clearly than a hurried photograph.

Give each entry a source line. Note the place, object and date, and identify the maker or collection when known. If you are unsure about an origin, say so. Similar-looking patterns should not automatically be treated as evidence of a shared history.

Use a few words for the visible structure: repeated lines, alternating shapes or a changing border. Then add your personal response on a separate line. This helps keep description, interpretation and preference from becoming mixed together.

Review several entries side by side after a few weeks. The connections may reveal something about your attention rather than about the objects’ origins. That is a worthwhile discovery, and it can guide more careful questions before any larger historical claim is made.
